We are excited to introduce a fun and interactive math activity for your classroom: the Addition and Subtraction Spinners. This free activity is designed for year 3 and year 4 students who are learning about addition and subtraction in their maths lessons. Combining the thrill of spinning wheels with essential arithmetic

practice, this resource promises to keep students engaged while they master their math skills.

 

Adding a Twist to Math Lessons

Addition and Subtraction Spinners transform routine math practice into an exciting game. By using spinners to generate random numbers, students get a unique problem-solving experience every time. This variability not only makes learning fun but also helps students develop strong mental math skills.

 

What's Included in the Activity

Our Addition and Subtraction Spinners activity consists of two pages:

  • Page 1: Problem Layout

    • Addition Problem (Left): Three blank boxes for the 3-digit number at the top and two blank boxes underneath for the 2-digit number.

    • Subtraction Problem (Right): Three blank boxes for the 3-digit number at the top and two blank boxes underneath for the 2-digit number.

  • Page 2: Spinning Wheels

    • Three Circles Divided into 10 Parts Each:

      • First Circle: 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900.

      • Middle Circle: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90.

      • Last Circle: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

 

How to Use the Addition and Subtraction Spinners

  1. Preparation: Print and laminate both pages. Add spinners to each of the circles on page 2. If you don’t have spinners, you can use a paper clip and pencil to create makeshift spinners.

  2. Generating Numbers:

    • For the Addition Problem: Spin the three wheels to create a 3-digit number and write it in the blank boxes on the left side of page 1. Spin the first two wheels to create a 2-digit number and write it underneath the 3-digit number.

    • For the Subtraction Problem: Repeat the same process to generate numbers for the subtraction problem on the right side of page 1.

  3. Solving Problems: Students solve the addition problem on the left and the subtraction problem on the right, practicing their arithmetic skills with every spin.
