Chance Lollies
Looking for a fun way to teach probability and chance? Chance Lollies is a free, engaging game designed for year 2, year 3, and year 4 students, offering an interactive approach to understanding probability concepts like likely, unlikely, and impossible outcomes. Through hands-on play, students learn the basics of probability while having fun competing to win.
What is the Game About?
In Chance Lollies, each player is given a spinner, divided into five unequal sections, with a lolly inside each section. The aim of the game is simple: be the first to get rid of your 10 counters by matching the lolly you spin with the lollies on the game board (page 2). The board features 3 shelves, each holding 5 different lollies. Players take turns spinning and placing counters on the corresponding lolly on the shelf.
However, not every lolly on the spinner appears on the shelf. If a player spins a lolly that’s not on the board, that turn is forfeited, representing an impossible outcome—a fun way to demonstrate how probability works.
How to Play
-
Place the game board in the center, with each player receiving their spinner and 10 counters.
-
Players take turns spinning the wheel and matching the lolly they land on to the ones on the game board.
-
The first player to place all their counters on the correct lollies wins.
-
If a player spins a lolly not on the shelf, their turn is skipped—an example of an impossible outcome.
Learning Outcomes
Chance Lollies is a fantastic way to help young students understand probability through practical, enjoyable learning. The game introduces key concepts like likely, unlikely, and impossible by varying the size of each section on the spinner, showing how the chance of landing on a lolly changes.
Students also develop critical thinking skills by observing how often certain lollies are spun and discussing which outcomes are most or least likely to occur. The game promotes collaborative learning while reinforcing important math concepts.
