CVC Word Mats
At Smart Boarding School, we continue to offer versatile and engaging resources that support early learners in their literacy journey. Our newest resource, CVC Word Mats, is perfect for helping kindergarten students master Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words. These mats are designed for repeated use, making them a valuable addition to any classroom or home-school setting. Best of all, they’re completely free to download by clicking the button at the
bottom of the page.
What Are CVC Word Mats?
The CVC Word Mats resource consists of 14 pages. On the first 12 pages, students are presented with a picture of a CVC word, along with three boxes for spelling the word, one letter per box. For example, if the picture is of a "cat," students will need to spell the word by placing the letters c, a, and t in the boxes next to the picture.

The activity encourages hands-on spelling practice and helps students build phonemic awareness by breaking down words into individual sounds. Teachers can choose whether students use pencils to write the words or take advantage of the resource’s reusable design.
How to Use the CVC Word Mats
The CVC Word Mats are designed for flexibility and can be reused multiple times, making them an ideal tool for classroom learning centers or individual practice. Here’s how you can use them:
-
Writing with Pencil: If you prefer, students can simply write the letters with a pencil to complete the word. Once the worksheet is filled out, it can be erased or replaced for additional practice.
-
Laminating for Repeated Use: To maximize the resource’s potential, teachers can laminate the CVC Word Mats. Once laminated, students can use plastic letters or letter tiles (such as Scrabble or Bananagram tiles) to spell the words by placing the correct letters into the boxes. This tactile element adds fun and interactivity to the learning experience.
-
Printable Alphabet Letters: On page 15 of the resource, you’ll find printable alphabet letters that can be cut out and laminated for use with the mats. This gives you an easy, ready-made option for letter tiles if you don’t have other resources on hand. Simply cut out the letters and students can arrange them on the CVC Word Mats to spell out the words.
-
Quick Reference Guide: To support teachers and ensure clarity, page 14 includes a quick reference guide. This page features all the pictures from the mats along with their corresponding CVC words underneath. If there’s any confusion about what a picture represents, this guide will provide immediate clarity.
