CVC Worksheet

At Smart Boarding School, we’re always focused on creating fun and engaging tools to support early literacy learners. Our latest resource, CVC Word Mats, is designed specifically to help kindergarten students practice Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words. These mats can be used repeatedly, making them an ideal addition to any classroom or homeschool toolkit. Plus, they’re completely free—just click the download button at the bottom of this page!

What Are CVC Word Mats?

Our CVC Word Mats set includes 14 pages of hands-on spelling practice. The first 12 pages feature pictures of simple CVC words with three empty boxes beside each image. Students are encouraged to spell the word by placing one letter in each box. For example, a picture of a "cat" would require students to fill in the boxes with "c," "a," and "t."

This exercise helps children break down words into individual sounds, a key skill for early literacy, while reinforcing spelling in a way that’s interactive and engaging.

Easy Ways to Use CVC Word Mats

We’ve designed these mats to be flexible and adaptable to your teaching needs. Here are a few options for using them:

  • Write with Pencils: Students can use pencils to fill in the letters, then erase and reuse the worksheet for more practice.

  • Lamination for Reusability: Laminating the mats makes them even more versatile. Once laminated, students can use plastic letters, letter tiles, or even alphabet magnets to complete the words. This adds a fun, tactile dimension to the learning process.

Printable Alphabet Letters Included

Don’t have access to letter tiles? No problem! Page 15 of the resource includes printable alphabet letters you can cut out and laminate for use with the mats. Simply print, cut, and let your students arrange the letters to match the CVC words on each mat.

Helpful Reference Guide

Page 14 includes a quick-reference guide showing all the CVC words and their corresponding pictures. This helps both teachers and students easily identify each image and check their answers.

Here are a few classroom ideas to help you get the most out of the CVC Word Mats:

  • Phonics Practice Stations: Set up a literacy station where students can work independently or in pairs using the laminated mats and letter tiles.

  • Group Spelling Games: Divide the class into small groups, where students can take turns spelling the words on the mats. This can encourage collaboration and reinforce phonics in a fun, team-based environment.

  • Phonics Assessment: The mats are a great tool for assessing how well students can sound out and spell CVC words. Watch them work to see how they’re progressing with their phonics skills.

  • Motor Skills Development: Working with letter tiles or cut-out letters helps young students strengthen their fine motor skills while they learn to spell.
