What Are Fact Family Triangles?

Our "Fact Family Triangles" resource provides a unique and effective method for teaching fact families. Each triangle features three numbers, one in each corner, where two of the numbers add up to the largest number. Students will use these numbers to write all the possible addition and subtraction sentences in the middle of the triangle. This helps them understand how numbers are related through different operations.

How to Use the Fact Family Triangles

  1. Print and Prepare:

    • Print pages 2 to 7 of the resource.

    • Cut out and laminate the triangles to create durable, reusable pieces.

  2. Understand the Triangles:

    • Each triangle has three numbers in its corners. The two smaller numbers add up to the largest number.

  3. Writing the Fact Families:

    • Using a dry erase marker, students will write all the addition and subtraction sentences in the middle of each triangle. For example, if a triangle has the numbers 15, 2, and 13, students will write:

      • 2 + 13 = 15

      • 13 + 2 = 15

      • 15 - 2 = 13

      • 15 - 13 = 2

  4. Practice and Reuse:

    • Because the triangles are laminated, students can wipe them clean and practice again, reinforcing their understanding of fact families through repeated use.

Educational Benefits

  • Reinforces Math Concepts:

    • Helps students understand the relationship between addition and subtraction through practical application.

  • Promotes Number Sense:

    • Encourages students to see numbers in different ways, enhancing their overall number sense.

  • Interactive Learning:

    • The hands-on activity keeps students engaged and makes learning more interactive and enjoyable.
