Kindergarten Writing Prompts

Finish the Sentence.jpeg

At Smart Boarding School, we are excited to offer a new resource aimed at helping kindergarten students develop their writing skills. Our Kindergarten Writing Prompts download is perfect for early writers who are just beginning to explore writing sentences and expressing their thoughts on paper. This free resource includes 25 pages, each featuring a unique writing prompt, space for students to write, an area for drawing a picture, and a list of helpful words to support their writing.

What’s Included?

  • 25 Writing Prompts: Each page has a fun, open-ended writing prompt that encourages students to think creatively and develop their ideas. The prompts are designed to be simple and engaging, making it easy for young writers to start crafting their sentences.

  • Writing Space: After reading the prompt, students have space to write their response. This gives them an opportunity to practice sentence formation, spelling, and handwriting, all while building confidence in their writing abilities.

  • Drawing Space: In addition to writing, each page provides a section for students to draw a picture related to their writing. This allows them to express their ideas visually, which is especially helpful for younger students who may feel more comfortable drawing before they write.

  • Helpful Word List: To support students as they write, a list of words is included on each page. These words are commonly used in early writing and help students when they are stuck or need ideas on how to complete their sentences.

How to Use the Resource in Your Classroom

This free resource is incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom. Here are some ideas:

  • Morning Work: Use the writing prompts as part of your morning routine. Have students complete a page as they come into the classroom, allowing them to start the day with a creative task that gets them focused and ready for learning.

  • Writing Centers: Incorporate the Kindergarten Writing Prompts into your literacy or writing centers. Students can independently complete a page, practice writing, and draw a picture that matches their story.

  • Homework or Take-Home Activities: Send the writing prompts home as part of a homework assignment. Parents will love seeing their child’s progress in writing, and students can enjoy completing the tasks with their family.

  • Small Group Work: For students who need a bit more support, the resource can be used during small group sessions. Teachers or assistants can work closely with students to help them generate ideas, form sentences, and build confidence in their writing abilities.

  • Free Writing Time: These pages are perfect for free writing time or early finishers. Students can choose a prompt and work on it independently, allowing them to develop their skills at their own pace.

  • Creative Writing Lessons: Teachers can use the writing prompts as part of a larger creative writing lesson. After students complete a page, they can share their writing with the class, helping to build communication skills and encourage peer learning.
