How to Play Make a Whole Using Decimals

Players: 2-3

Materials Needed:

  • A spinning wheel with decimal values (teachers can attach a spinner or use a makeshift spinner by spinning a paperclip around the tip of a pencil)

  • A 10 by 10 grid for each player (each box represents 0.01)

Instructions:

  1. Spin the Wheel: Each player takes turns spinning the wheel to determine the decimal value they will use.

  2. Colour the Grid: Players then colour in the corresponding number of boxes on their grid according to the decimal they spun. For example, if a player spins 0.1, they will colour in 10 boxes since each box represents 0.01.

  3. Continue Turns: Players continue taking turns spinning the wheel and colouring in their grid.

  4. Achieving the Goal: The objective is to fill the grid to make a whole, meaning colouring in all 100 boxes, which represents 1.00.

  5. Winning the Game: Once all the boxes are filled, players add up the total decimal values they have coloured in. The player with the most accurately completed grid is the winner.
