Make CVC Words

At Smart Boarding School, we’re dedicated to providing resources that make early literacy engaging and fun for young learners. Our newest free resource, Make CVC Words, is designed specifically for kindergarten students who are learning about Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words in their literacy lessons.

This worksheet focuses on helping students build words by practicing the essential skill of recognizing short vowel sounds. The download is completely free and includes 5 pages—each with a different vowel focus, making it a versatile resource for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers.

What’s Included in the "Make CVC Words" Worksheet?

The Make CVC Words worksheet is designed to help students practice blending consonants and vowels to form simple CVC

words. Here’s how each of the 5 pages is structured:

  • Page 1: Focus on Short "a"

    • Students are given starting consonants and an ending sound, such as “ad.” Students need to add the given ending to form words like bad, lad, mad, dad, sad, and had.

    • The page includes 4 different word endings to ensure variety and plenty of practice.

  • Pages 2–5: Focus on Short "e," "i," "o," and "u"

    • The format remains the same on these pages, but each focuses on a different short vowel sound. For example, students will create words like bet, met, pet (short "e") or log, fog, dog (short "o").

The consistent structure across all 5 pages ensures that students can concentrate on identifying the middle vowel sounds while blending them with different starting consonants.

How to Use the "Make CVC Words" Worksheet

This free worksheet is ideal for use in classrooms, at home, or in literacy centers. Here are some ideas for how you can use this resource:

  1. Small Group Activity: Work with a small group of students to introduce each vowel. Encourage them to sound out each word as they create it. This group setting allows for more personalized support and practice.

  2. Independent Practice: Once students are familiar with the structure of CVC words, this worksheet can be used as independent practice. Give students time to form the words, sounding them out as they work through each page.

  3. Spelling Challenge: Turn it into a spelling challenge by having students verbally share the words they form. As each word is shared, discuss its meaning and use it in a sentence. This helps reinforce vocabulary and context.

  4. Homework: This worksheet can also be sent home as part of a literacy homework packet. Parents can work alongside their children to reinforce classroom learning, giving students more opportunities to practice building CVC words.

  5. Phonics Learning Center: Set up a phonics learning station with the Make CVC Words worksheet and a set of letter manipulatives or magnetic letters. Students can match the consonants and vowel sounds to physically create the words before writing them down.

Why is "Make CVC Words" a Valuable Resource?
