Learning phonics has never been more exciting! Smart Boarding School is thrilled to offer a free phonics game called "Monster Bump – ay," perfect for kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2 students. This interactive game makes practicing the "ay" digraph a delightful and competitive experience for young learners.

What is the "Monster Bump – ay" Game?

The "Monster Bump – ay" game combines phonics practice with strategy and friendly competition. Players spin, read, and cover words featuring the "ay" digraph, making it a great activity to boost reading and word recognition skills during phonics or literacy lessons.

 

How to Play

Here’s how to enjoy the "Monster Bump – ay" game:

  1. Set Up

    • Print the game board and spinner.

    • Each player chooses 6 counters of the same color (e.g., blue, green, red). If one player picks blue counters, others must pick different colors.

  2. Take Turns Spinning

    • Players take turns spinning the wheel (page 2).

    • After spinning, players read the "ay" word indicated by the spinner.

  3. Cover the Word

    • On their turn, players cover the matching word on the game board with one of their colored counters.

  4. Bump Opponent’s Counters

    • If a player lands on a word already covered by an opponent, they can "bump" the opponent’s counter off and replace it with their own.

  5. Freeze the Spot

    • If a player lands on a word they’ve already covered, they add a second counter on top of their own. This "freezes" the spot, preventing other players from bumping them off.

  6. Win the Game

    • The first player to use all 6 of their counters wins the game!
