Building a strong foundation in maths is crucial for young learners, and understanding fact families is an essential step towards mastering basic arithmetic and algebra. To support this learning, Smart Boarding School is excited to offer a free, hands-on activity called “Roll A Fact Family,” designed specifically for year 1 and year 2 students.

Discovering Fact Families through Play

Fact families help students see the relationship between addition and subtraction, laying the groundwork for algebraic thinking. The “Roll A Fact Family” activity transforms this concept into a fun and interactive game that keeps students engaged while learning.

What’s Included in the Activity

The “Roll A Fact Family” activity includes a downloadable worksheet and requires a pair of dice. Here’s how it works:

Downloadable Worksheet: The worksheet provides spaces for students to record the numbers rolled on

the dice and to write out the corresponding fact families.

Pair of Dice: Each student or pair of students will need two dice to roll and generate the numbers for their fact families.

How to Conduct the “Roll A Fact Family” Activity

Print the Worksheet: Download and print the “Roll A Fact Family” worksheet for each student. The printable worksheet is available at the bottom of this blog.
Roll the Dice: Students roll two dice and note the numbers that come up.
Record the Numbers: Students write down the numbers from the dice in the designated boxes on the worksheet.
Create Fact Families: Using the numbers from the dice, students write out the fact families. For example, if they roll a 2 and a 3, they will write:
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 3 + 2 = 5
- 5 - 3 = 2
- 5 - 2 = 3
