Building a strong foundation in mathematics is essential for young learners, and understanding fact families is a vital step toward mastering basic arithmetic and algebra. To support this learning, Smart Boarding School is excited to offer a free, hands-on activity called “Roll a Fact Family - Multiplication and Division,” designed specifically for Year 3 and Year 4 students.

Discovering Fact Families through Play
Fact families help students see the relationship between multiplication and division, laying the groundwork for algebraic thinking. The “Roll a Fact Family - Multiplication and Division” activity transforms this concept into a fun and interactive game that keeps students engaged while learning.

What’s Included in the Activity
The “Roll a Fact Family - Multiplication and Division” activity includes a downloadable worksheet and requires a pair of dice. Here’s how it works:

  • Downloadable Worksheet: The worksheet provides spaces for students to record the numbers rolled on the dice and to write out the corresponding fact families.

  • Pair of Dice: Each student or pair of students will need two dice to roll and generate the numbers for their fact families.

How to Conduct the “Roll a Fact Family - Multiplication and Division” Activity

  1. Print the Worksheet: Download and print the “Roll a Fact Family - Multiplication and Division” worksheet for each student. The printable worksheet is available at the bottom of this blog.

  2. Roll the Dice: Students roll two dice and note the numbers that come up.

  3. Record the Numbers: Students write down the numbers from the dice in the designated boxes on the worksheet.

  4. Create Fact Families: Using the numbers from the dice, students write out the fact families. For example, if they roll a 2 and a 3, they will write:

  • 2 × 3 = 6

  • 3 × 2 = 6

  • 6 ÷ 3 = 2

  • 6 ÷ 2 = 3

Why This Activity Works

  • Hands-On Learning: Rolling dice and writing out fact families engages students in active learning, making abstract concepts more concrete.

  • Skill Development: This activity reinforces multiplication and division skills and helps students understand the relationship between these operations.

  • Preparation for Algebra: Fact families are a precursor to algebra, and this activity sets a solid foundation for future mathematical learning.
