Sort the CVC Words

At Smart Boarding School, we understand the importance of early phonics education and the joy of hands-on learning. To support teachers, parents, and homeschoolers, we’ve created a fun and interactive booklet called My CVC Book. This resource is designed specifically for kindergarten students who are beginning to explore Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words in their phonics lessons.

The My CVC Book is a printable, 8-page booklet that students can assemble and customize themselves, helping to reinforce phonics skills in a hands-on and engaging way. Best of all, it’s completely free and can be downloaded by clicking the button at the bottom of this page.

What is "My CVC Book"?

This resource is designed to help students practice sorting CVC words by their middle vowel sound. Here's what the booklet includes:

  • Page 1: Title page – students can personalize this page with their name and color it in.

  • Pages 2 to 6: Each page features one of the short vowels: a, e, i, o, u. Students will use these pages to sort CVC words.

  • Page 7: This page contains a variety of CVC word pictures, which students will cut out and glue onto the correct vowel page.

  • Page 8: A reference guide for teachers. This page shows the same CVC word pictures from page 7 but includes the correct spelling of each word. This ensures teachers can easily identify what each picture represents in case there is any uncertainty.

How Does "My CVC Book" Work?

The activity is simple yet highly effective in reinforcing CVC patterns and phonics skills. Here’s how it works:

  1. Printing the Booklet: Print the document and staple pages 1 through 6 together to create a mini booklet. This gives each student their very own personalized CVC book.

  2. Cutting Out the Pictures: Students will cut out the pictures on page 7, which include images like a mop, bat, pen, and cup—all CVC words with a single vowel sound in the middle.

  3. Sorting by Vowel Sound: As students identify the middle vowel sound in each word, they will glue the picture onto the correct page in the booklet. For example, the picture of a "mop" would go on the page with the vowel "o" at the top.

  4. Teacher’s Reference Page: Page 8 acts as a reference guide for teachers, displaying the pictures with their corresponding words. This can be helpful if there’s any confusion about what a particular picture represents.

Ideas for Using "My CVC Book" in the Classroom

Here are some classroom ideas for how you can incorporate My CVC Book into your phonics lessons:

  1. Phonics Review Activity: Use the booklet at the end of a lesson to review the CVC words your students have been learning. After cutting and sorting, students can take home their personalized booklet to reinforce their learning at home with parents.

  2. Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and provide them with the booklet. As they work through cutting and sorting the words, they can discuss their answers with one another, which promotes peer learning and communication.

  3. Early Finishers’ Task: This booklet is a great activity for students who finish other tasks early. It keeps them engaged while still practicing key phonics skills.

  4. Interactive Learning Centers: Set up a phonics learning center with the materials for My CVC Book ready for students. Students can move through the station, cutting, sorting, and assembling their booklets at their own pace.

  5. Assessment of Vowel Recognition: Once students complete their booklets, you can use them to assess how well they understand the concept of sorting words by middle vowel sounds. It’s an easy way to check if they can distinguish between the vowels a, e, i, o, and u in CVC words.

Benefits of Using "My CVC Book"

  • Phonemic Awareness: The activity helps students practice recognizing and distinguishing between vowel sounds.

  • Fine Motor Skills: Cutting out pictures helps develop fine motor skills, an important aspect of early childhood education.

  • Engagement: The creative aspect of assembling the booklet adds an element of fun and ownership for students, keeping them engaged and excited to learn.

  • Comprehension and Application: Students not only learn to read CVC words but also apply their knowledge by sorting and organizing them.
