At Smart Boarding School, we’re thrilled to introduce “Strike it Out,” a dynamic and engaging addition and subtraction game designed to boost mathematical skills for year 1 and year 2 students. This game turns number practice into a fun-filled experience, helping young learners master basic arithmetic through play.

How to Play "Strike it Out"

The “Strike it Out” game uses a number line from 0 to 20, providing a visual and interactive way for students to

practice addition and subtraction. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download and Print: Access and print the "Strike it Out" worksheet from our website. Each worksheet features a number line ranging from 0 to 20.

  2. First Player’s Move:

    • Player 1 chooses a number on the number line and crosses it out.

    • The player then selects a second number and crosses it out as well.

    • Next, they circle the sum or difference of the two chosen numbers and record the calculation in the designated Player 1 section.

    • For instance, if Player 1 crosses out 3 and 8, they will circle 11 (3 + 8 = 11) and write the equation under the number line.

  3. Second Player’s Turn:

    • Player 2 must begin by crossing off the number that Player 1 circled.

    • They then select another number to create a new sum or difference, crossing out both numbers used.

    • Player 2 circles the resulting number and notes the calculation in the Player 2 section.

    • For example, if Player 2 crosses out 11 and 9, they will circle 20 (11 + 9 = 20) and document the equation.

  4. Winning the Game: The game continues with each player taking turns. The winner is the player who prevents their opponent from making a move.

Why "Strike it Out" is Beneficial

  • Enhances Arithmetic Skills: This game provides a practical way for students to practice and reinforce their addition and subtraction skills.

  • Promotes Strategic Thinking: Players need to think ahead to block their opponent’s moves, developing critical thinking and planning skills.

  • Encourages Friendly Competition: The game format fosters a fun, competitive environment that motivates students to engage with math.

  • Adaptable Learning Tool: Teachers can easily adapt the game to suit different learning levels by modifying the number line range or allowing only addition or subtraction.
