What is the "Trailing Zero" Activity?
"Trailing Zero" is a printable math activity aimed at reinforcing place value concepts for Year 3 and Year 4 students. The activity involves creating 4-digit numbers and performing simple addition and subtraction to explore the effects of changing each digit's place value.
How Does the "Trailing Zero" Activity Work?
-
Preparation:
-
Download and print the "Trailing Zero" activity sheets. For durability and repeated use, consider laminating the sheets.
-
Each student will need a spinner, which can be made using a spinner arrow or a makeshift spinner using a pencil and a paperclip.
-
-
Creating 4-Digit Numbers:
-
Students spin the spinner four times, each time noting the number that appears (from 0 to 9).
-
They then combine the four numbers to form a 4-digit number and write this number on their recording sheet.
-
-
Addition and Subtraction Practice:
-
Students will perform a series of addition and subtraction operations on their 4-digit number to complete the activity grid.
-
On the right side of the original number, students fill in three boxes:
-
The first box is the original number plus 1 (+1).
-
The second box is the original number plus 10 (+10).
-
The third box is the original number plus 100 (+100).
-
-
On the left side of the original number, students fill in three boxes:
-
The first box is the original number minus 1 (-1).
-
The second box is the original number minus 10 (-10).
-
The third box is the original number minus 100 (-100).
-
-
-
Repetition for Mastery:
